Stone & Webster Company is established.

November 30, 1889

Founded by Charles Stone and Edwin Webster, it is located initially in a rented office at 4 Post Office Square. It moves several times before settling into a building at the corner of Milk Street and Batterymarch Street in 1907 and then at 90 Broad Street in 1929. Originally staffed by students from MIT, it begins by offering to test electrical systems and equipment for manufacturers and users. By 1903, it offers a full range of design and construction services. The founding partners retire in the 1930s and the company subsequently becomes one of the largest engineering firms in the U.S.
